Fashion Icons and Striped Socks

Earlier this week, I was watching a little bit of a Punky Brewster episode. I admired her cute little Rainbow Brite jacket…and her socks…and her shoes…when it hit me.

Every bit of my sense of style can be traced back to the 1980s…and I’m not talking about Cyni Lauper–though I do like some of her style.

Probably my most defining style aspect is that I love wearing striped socks. My family and my friends all know this about me. In fact, my very young friends know this about me as well. The episode of Punky Brewster brought it all full circle.

My favorite television shows and dolls/toys when growing up were (in no certain order):

Strawberry Shortcake
Punky Brewster
Rainbow Brite
Holly Hobbie
Raggedy Anne

What do all of these girls have in common? All of them. Every single one of them has a common feature. Guessed it yet?

They all wear striped socks. Seriously. If you grew up in the ’80s and you consider yourself quirky at all, take a good look at your sock collection. Now, think back to your favorite playthings of your childhood. Any style resemblance??

Decorating for Christmas: BrightHaven Style

Here at BrightHaven, we put up Christmas lights and a Christmas tree each year–but we never go just all out.

This year has been different, for some reason. We have tomato cage trees in the front yard–one complete with flashing lights synchronized to music!

The inside tree is loaded with gorgeous vintage glass ornaments, the mantel is decked with my vintage bottle brush tree and reindeer collection. And take a look at the peacock wreath! It’s enormous. Too big for the front door so above the mantel it goes!

And then, there are the handmade snowflakes! Oh yes, I cut out snowflakes from coffee filters and then sprayed them to our front glass door. They are perfectly quirky. Just how I like things. Check out The Handmade House to find the tutorial for these pretty little things.

National Biscuits and Gravy Day

Imagine my surprise this morning while perusing my twitter feed. I discovered that today is National Biscuit and Gravy Day! Since we had biscuits for breakfast yesterday, I simply toasted the leftovers and made a delicious milk gravy to go along with them. Fry up some bacon, ham or sausage on the side and you’ll have a delicious breakfast/brunch/lunch/dinner for today.
